Devyn Deloera
INTRODUCING DEVYN: Some artists discover their creative calling later in life while others demonstrate their talents straight out of the womb. For West Texas-bred pop singer Devyn, it was only a matter of 18 months before she was singing the old time gospel standard He Touched Me in perfect pitch, followed by a string of family praise gatherings led by her parents, pre-teen talent shows and a trip to the recording studio by a mere 12!
I was an early talker who learned words fast, so I was able to up pick on memorizing songs, says the relative newcomer to the national platform, but a seasoned performance veteran (even in spite of her youth). I never had any formal vocal lessons, but I did spend a lot of time in choir. I probably knew when I was about 9 that this was meant to be my path. I did a talent show in town where I placed and I really liked being on stage.
But as evident as her God given talents were to those who saw the formative star in the making, Devyn suffered from near crippling anxiety and depression as adolescence set in. The tensions grew so significant she was temporarily taken out of public school for a home school setting, though even then, the struggle for peace seemed almost insurmountable.
I’m not sure how it happened, but I just remember wanting to get away from the whole world and wanting to hide in a tiny box in the darkness,†she reflects of the painful process that was also accompanied by excruciating migraines. I didn’t want to see anyone and I cried for no reason. I really don’t remember all that much about that time other than coming to a point praying with my parents and eventually just turning it over to God. It won’t last forever if you trust Him and I would encourage anyone going through it that you can overcome it.
Jump ahead to her teenage years of restoration and the singer gleaned pop inspiration from the likes of Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson, Jump5 and Demi Lovato as she eased back into the spotlight. From then through now, prominent performances included everything from a sold out coliseum slot opening for legendary pop trio Phillips, Craig & Dean to a home church date alongside Trent Monk (of Flicker Records acoustic rockers Monk & Neagle).
It was really cool because while I was singing, the guys in Phillips, Craig & Dean came out of their dressing rooms to watch me and were so kind and complimentary, she recalls. It was probably the biggest crowd I’ve ever played for, but I’ve never been nervous. Trent is a really fun and talented musician, so that was really cool and comfortable as well
Most recently, Devyn stepped out of the studio after putting the finishing touches on a three song EP produced by Grammy Award winning producers Michael and Ron Morales at San Antonio’s historic Studio M. The project is comprised of How Great You Are, Next Chapter and Love’s All Around, all of which have spiritual intentions, but also leave room for interpretation by her peers of any faith backgrounds.
I want to inspire listeners who are my age or any age really to choose the good over bad and make the right choices in life, she sums up. I just want to glorify Him and move other people to do the same when they listen to my music, and even if they have different beliefs, I want them to walk away inspired.
