The Reliques
The Reliques (pronounced, “relics”) formed as a duo of singer-songwriters from the heartbeat of the hill country – Austin, TX. The folk duo has been featured on both KISS FM-96.7 and The River 102.3 and have graced the front pages of Austin publications, The Daily Texan’s DT Weekend and Austin Christian Family Magazine.
In the Spring of 2009, the girls received the honor of being The River’s Austin Artist Showcase winner, a contest that welcomed thousands of listener/voters from all over the hill country. As winners of the showcase, the band received various accolades from nationally recognized Christian industry artists and professionals, and an opportunity to headline the Indie stage of the Texas Hill Festival in September 2009.
In an April 2009 issue of the Daily Texan’s DT Weekend, Editor Francisco Marin, says:
“These sirens of Texas folk make music spilling over with intimacy and real emotional gravitas…The Reliques’ sound is immediately recognizable: the lilting sound of Dossey’s mandolin over Monteen’s acoustic guitar, overlapping vocals reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac, the sparse arrangements chug along, trainlike and persistent.”
Friends from college, Sarah Monteen and Sarah Dossey of The Reliques set out to create a sound that was both memorable and wholesome, while adding folky musical elements such as mandolin and harmonica throughout their set. Singing two-part harmonies while holding onto an acoustic feel, the band is oftentimes compared to Nickelcreek, Sandra McCracken, and Jewel.
At press time Spring of 2010, the girls are taking a bit of time to get songs ready for new record and touring more this Fall of 2010.
The Reliques aim to create an honest relationship with their audience, fostering real life conversation about faith through their music. According to their profile on MySpace, the girls are nearly as serious about getting to know their fans as they are about their music:
“We would like to take this time to extend a warm hand of gratitude and a great hug to you,” they say, “for choosing us as a trusted friend. We hope to grow with you and learn with you and eat and drink with you as well.”
As Christians in the music business, the duo seeks, above all, to be honest and sometimes frank with their songs. Instead of latching onto surface-level ideals and phrases, The Reliques live out the struggles and triumphs of faith in their music – getting to the very core of a life lived for Christ.
